Center Welcomes New Board Members
Welcome to the newest members of our Board of Directors—Kimberlee
Barrett-Johnson, Jean Foss, Connie Hallquist, Jackie Martin, Jeanne
McCusker, and Bob Tucker. If you’re not already familiar with them, please
allow us to briefly introduce the people who will be adding their valuable
time and expertise to furthering our mission over the next few years.
Kimberlee Barrett-Johnson, Senior Financial Planner for Amerprise
Financial Services, specializes in personal planning for risk protection,
retirement, estate planning, tax management, and asset allocation. A
graduate of Rice University, with an M.A. in Ethics, Theology and Culture
from UVA, Kimberlee’s community service includes a previous term on the
Center’s Board and our Resource Development Committee; co-chairing the
Chamber’s Nonprofit Council; and serving as president of our local Planned
Giving Council. She also provides volunteer financial and estate planning
consultations for Senior Center members by appointment.
Mary Jean Foss, Center member and president of Senior Council, grew up in
Belchertown, MA, but graduated from high school in Barcelona, Spain. After
college in Maine and a stint teaching biology in Waynesboro, Jean began
working for Albemarle Country Schools, earning a Master’s of Education
along the way. She retired in 2007 after 33 years with the County, but
still works as a science consultant for a UVA research project and is a
board member of the Virginia Association of Science Teachers.
Connie Hallquist, founder of Nest Home Health Modifications, is also
Executive Vice President of Merchandising for Healthy Directions (doctor
formulated nutritional supplements for adults age 50+). Previously,
Connie—who earned her MBA from UVA’s Darden School of Business—founded and
was CEO of Gold Violin, an award-winning multi-channel company dedicated
to providing products for independent living aimed at the mature market.
Jacklene G. (Jackie) Martin is Director of Community Outreach for Martha
Jefferson Hospital, where she develops and implements community benefit
programs and projects to improve the quality of life in our community.
Before that, she was Director of Volunteer Services and Human Resources
Coordinator at MJH, where she won the President’s Award in 1999. In 1992,
while working at Jackson-Via Elementary School, Jackie was named
Charlottesville Public Schools Employee of the Year. She received her B.A.
in Business Administration and Computer Science from Mary Baldwin and is a
Leadership Charlottesville graduate.
Jeanne McCusker began her career with IBM while still a student at the
University of South Florida and, after earning her marketing degree,
continued with the company working in education sales. After moving to
Charlottesville, she worked first in medical software sales and then for
multiple startup companies. When Jeanne’s mother died after a battle with
Lou Gehrig’s disease, the family’s experience of caring for a loved one
inspired a career shift; Jeanne opened the local Home Instead Senior Care
in 2003. Along with Habitat for Humanity, she has served on the boards of
Leadership Charlottesville Alumni Association and Women United in
Philanthropy, as well as chairing the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk.
Robert (Bob) W. Tucker, Jr., recently retired as the Albemarle County
Executive after 20 years. Prior to that, he was the Deputy County
Executive for seven years and led the Planning department. He has also
served as a lecturer and adjunct professor at UVA’s School of Architecture
and in the departments of Environmental Planning, Sociology and Civil
Engineering. Bob received his B.S. from U. Georgia and his Master’s in
Urban and Regional Planning from Ole Miss.
As we welcome new members, we must bid adieu to those who are rotating off
the board: Ray East, Dawn Heneberry, Bill Hodson, Chuck St.Clair, and
George Thompson. We are grateful for their dedication and service, and
though they are (temporarily, at least) no longer on the board, we look
forward to their continued support of the Center.
