2008 Emily Couric Community Advocacy
Award
The
Junior League of Charlottesville presented Mary Reese with its 2008 Emily
Couric Community Advocacy Award on August 17 during a reception at the
Senior Center.
Dianna Gibson, League President, made the presentation on behalf of the
Junior League in front of a large crowd of well wishers. The award of
$2,000 is presented each year to a local non-profit organization in honor
of an individual it nominates who most exemplifies the spirit of the late
Senator Emily Couric’s community advocacy.
The Junior League of Charlottesville created this community award
program to honor state Senator Couric, who was a great friend to the
League and a former member of its Community Resource Board.
In accepting the award, Mary noted, “One does not come to a moment like
this without the involvement and support of so many others.” She cited the
example of her parents, “who believed that to whom much is given, much is
required. I do what I do to give back to a community that has given so
much to me.”
Mary is president of Senior Center, Inc.’s Board of Directors, and has
been an active member since 1996. A former Assistant Superintendent of
Charlottesville City Schools, Mary has worked tirelessly on behalf of many
community organizations, including MACAA’s Head Start program and Barrett
Day Care Center.
The Center’s Executive Director, Peter Thompson, read a letter of
congratulations from Delegate David Toscano. Patrick Keese, Alexander
Hahn, and Eric Hahn provided music during the reception.
