Senior Center Wins 2010 Community Service Award from UVa Nursing Honor
Society
Charlottesville, VA – February 26, 2010 – The Senior Center has
been awarded the 2010 Community Service Award from the University of
Virginia School of Nursing’s Beta Kappa chapter of Sigma Theta Tau
International.
The Community Service Award was created to recognize community leaders who
have influenced healthcare in the social, political, economic and/or
institutional arena. Criteria include endorsement and support from
nursing, other health professionals and community leaders; local,
statewide, and/or national contributions as an advocate of nursing and/or
healthcare; and contributions that significantly enhance the level of
health or healthcare of the community.
The Awards Committee commended the Senior Center for “so many incredible
and broad accomplishments. For 50 years, the Center has provided myriad
services to enhance the cognitive, emotional and physical health of older
adults in our community. It has provided advocacy and influenced social
change through creating a positive view of aging. And it has influenced
creation of services and has been a political force for change through
well-attended candidate forums.”
Gina DeGennaro, Committee Chair, added that “the passionate leadership of
the Senior Center has provided opportunities for seniors to access
invaluable resources in the Charlottesville community for half a century.”
An awards dinner is scheduled for May 7 at the University of Virginia’s
Rotunda Dome Room.
