HealthWise by Martha Jefferson Hospital - is a free membership program for adults 50 and over. It provides timely programs and research on health topics, and will assist on finding a local doctor.
University of Virginia Health System - patient and consumer information link to UVa's Health System. Includes the Directory of Physicians, information about patient services, as well as health and disease-related information for the lay reader.
University of Virginia Geriatrics - Geriatrics is the branch of medicine that focuses on achieving the highest possible level of physical and functional well-being for older adults, preventing disability and disease, and promoting independence as aging occurs.
JABA Health Services Program - helps to improve access to primary health care for the area's growing population of at-risk elderly. This program also has the potential to greatly reduce long-term health costs for the homebound elderly and chronically ill.
Healthy Recipes - from Martha Jefferson Hospital nutritionist Rita Smith. She offers a growing selection of heart-healthy, nutritious recipes at this site
HealthSource Library - Martha Jefferson Hospital provides print and computer database material, videos, and newsletters on all health matters. See hours for walk-in help by trained volunteer staff.
Body*Mind*Spirit
- consists of a group of extremely talented, loving and professional
instructors and healers offering Hatha Yoga classes, bodywork &
other healing techniques, as well as specially designed classes
lectures and workshops. They are located on Preston Avenue in
Charlotesville.
Blue Ridge Yoga
- classes are an invigorating practice of asanas (postures),
emphasizing strength, flexibility, awareness, and deep relaxation with
appropriate adjustments for all levels of fitness and experience.
The Cardiac Yoga® Program
- is a system of health promotion and stress management that focuses on
the special needs of heart patients and their families.
Heart Health & Fitness - is a Martha Jefferson Hospital program including:
Atlantic Sports and Rehabilitation Center - offers aquatic therapy, massage, bladder health therapy, physical therapy, pain relief, and other health and fitness services.
SPECTRUM Therapy - is a privately owned rehabilitation company with two locations in the Charlottesville area, and they provide in-home service. They do traditional physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy services, as well as specialty services and programs that include sports medicine, athletic training, workers compensation, hand therapy and orthotic fabrication.
BenefitsCheckUp - is an online screening tool designed for seniors and those who assist them. The confidential questionnaire determines eligibility for 1,300 different federal, state, and private benefit programs that may pay for some of their costs of prescription drugs, health care, utilities, and other essential items or services. This is a service of the National Council on the Aging.
bodytalk® - is a non-profit community service sponsored by the University of Virginia Health System. The program is designed to provide you with easy access to "over-the-counter" health information explained in everyday language. You e-mail your request. The information packet they mail is assembled specifically to your request. They say that they have "the most current resources available.

NIH SeniorHealth.gov - is an useful Web site for older adults developed jointly by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the National Library of Medicine (NLM), both part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Medline Plus - is the gateway source for health and medical information offered by the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health. It includes a medical encyclopedia and dictionary, and current health news.
Pocket Guide to Staying Healthy at 50+ - provides an extensive outline of topics to improve your health, developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Health Topics from Third Age - gives a list of ways to improve the quality of your life, and describes the suggested approaches. Free courses are also available.
Senior Net - provides help for specific health conditions.
Medicare Website - is the official web site for Medicare recipients. Look for information on Medicare benefits, including new prescription drug cards.
AARP - gives healthy living tips.
Service Dogs of Virginia, Inc. is a Charlottesville based non-profit organization dedicated to raising and training service dogs to assist people who have disabilities. Their goal is to help individuals in wheelchairs or with a mobility disorder to become more independent through the assistance of a highly trained dog. The site contains information about how to apply to get a service dog and about how to support the work of the organization.
The Arc of the Piedmont - improves the quality of life of adults with, or at risk of, mental retardation and developmental disabilities, and the lives of their families, through service, advocacy and education.
The Jefferson Area Disability Services Board - is staffed by the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission with a volunteer group of citizens, people with disabilities, and service providers. Their purpose is to stimulate public awareness, foster coalitions of committed and educated advocates, and enhance local government interest in disability issues.
Alzheimer’s Association - of Central and Western Virginia, serves Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, Lynchburg, Roanoke and surrounding counties, their mission is to enhance care and support for individuals, their families and caregivers.
Hospice of the Piedmont - programs involve a team-oriented approach to expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support expressly tailored to the patient's needs and wishes for for quality, compassionate care at the end-of-life. Support is extended to the patient's loved ones, as well. At the center of their program is the belief that each of us has the right to die pain-free and with dignity, with our families receiving the necessary support to allow us to do so. The focus is on caring, not curing, and, in most cases, care is provided in the patient's home.
National Council On Aging - "is a private, nonprofit association of some 3,500 organizations and individuals that includes senior centers, adult day service centers, area agencies on aging, employment services, congregate meal sites, faith congregations, health centers, and senior housing."
American Society on Aging - has created strategies and materials to enhance the capacity of national, state and local organizations in serving the health promotion and disease prevention needs of older adults.
