Lifelong Learning Resources


Osher Institute for Lifelong Learning (JILL) - classes are taught by specialists in their fields, many of them professors retired from the University of Virginia. Classes are typically small and lively with interesting lectures and/or discussions. Classes meet once a week for two hours and last usually 3 or 6 weeks. Subject material of classes is quite varied.

Albemarle County Parks and Recreation - offers special interest classes at various schools within Albemarle County.

City Parks and Recreation - offers special interest classes at various schools and recreation centers in Charlottesville.

Senior Center Computer Lab - provides an opportunity for all computer users to gather at a monthly meeting, and for special workshops on topics of interest. Training is provided both formally and informally by members who staff the computer lab. The lab is open to all members of the Senior Center, with both PCs and Macs available.

Wired Seniors Helping Seniors - answer questions on topics such as home maintenance, computers, photography, cooking, pets and sports. You may have answers that would help someone else.

Jefferson-Madison Regional Library - Through this website, you may obtain information from computers all over the world. This library website and our circulating libraries are designed to promote the kinds of knowledge necessary for us to be the guardians of our own rights and liberties. Our website and library collections provide equal opportunities for everyone to become more educated and informed.

UVA School of Continuing and Professional Studies - offers noncredit personal enrichment courses at times and at places that are convenient to adults. These noncredit courses are designed for individuals who want substantive intellectual activities, but who do not need the additional credit or degree study. Each spring and fall, the school offers dozens of courses on subjects in the humanities, science and the natural world, personal finance and computing, language, and more. Most classes meet for two hours one night a week, for between six and ten weeks.

Community Scholar Progam at UVA - allows you to enroll in two UVA-credit courses per semester as a non-degree student.

TraveLearn Network - is a network of more than 300 universities and colleges nationwide that provides learning vacations for adults. TraveLearn, Inc. specializes in learning as well as travel. Knowledgeable escorts from the TraveLearn Network of participating institutions along with carefully selected guides and in-country resource people are the key to the learning aspects of this travel opportunity.

AARP Learning & Technology - has articles to keep you up to date.

Elderhostel Programs - has thousands of enriching learning opportunities close to home or throughout the U.S., Canadian Provinces, and 90-plus countries around the world.

Virginia  Cooperative Extension - provides Family and Community Sciences programs for Albemarle County that bring specialist, agent, and volunteer expertise together to address the needs and priority issues facing Virginia's families.
