The “Head Start Knitters”

Click here to see a slide show.

All throughout the year, the Head Start Knitters use donated yarn to knit matching hats & mittens for children in the Head Start Program of Charlottesville, Albemarle County, and surrounding counties. The Knitters come by Senior Center, Inc. to pick up donated yarn, and then knit or crochet at home using their own patterns or ones supplied by the group leaders. Once they have several sets completed, they return the hats & mittens to the Center where they are stored until our annual “Hats & Mittens Party” in December. The MAACA Head Start staff and parents, along with one Head Start class, join all of the volunteers for a reception complete with refreshments and a visit from Santa Claus. The hats & mittens are then taken to the Head Start office for distribution throughout the coming year.

If you like to keep your hands busy, this is a good way to fend off arthritis and at the same time make a donation to the children in our community.

Please contact , Coordinator of Volunteer Resources, for more information on how you can get involved with the Head Start Knitters.

Donations of yarn and knitting needles are always welcome.
