Senior Center

Hiking Groups at the Senior Center

The Senior Center has hiking groups that meet on Monday and Wednesday with over 40 members involved.

Monday short hikes are about four miles, and the long hikes are about six. The Wednesday hikes are about eight miles.

Both groups meet at the Senior Center and leave at 9:00 a.m. Most hikes take place in the Shenandoah National Park or the George Washington Forest. Click to see the schedule and contact information.

Those who wish to participate should:

- meet the group of their choice at the Senior Center on the day and time indicated above.

- bring at least 1 quart of water for short hikes and 2 quarts for long ones.

- bring lunch.

- bring a change of shoes to wear in the car, especially on the return, out of courtesy for the driver, so that your hiking boots won’t stain the rugs.  Keep your boots in a bag.

- wear appropriate clothing for the weather and appropriate foot wear. Sneakers are not adequate.

- bring $5.00 for the carpool driver.

If you want to join the long hikers you must have precious hiking experience, or experience in energy intensive sports such as skiing, jogging, biking long distances. Walking experience, no matter how long or regular, is not sufficient.

In each group, there are Senior Center volunteers planning and leading the hikes, and they emphasize fellowship, fun, exercise, and safety in the wonderful natural areas of Central Virginia. Sometimes, there are extended travel itineraries scheduled for other hiking and walking trips out of the area.
