Being a member of the Senior Center provides reduced rates for fee-based programs and allows for participation in events that are open to members only. Guests are welcome to attend events that are open to all.  The events described below are annotated as follows.

It’s that time of year again! We’ve even added one more day this year, so that more of you will be able to take advantage of this FREE service. Please note that the days and hours have changed:

Great Decisions    
Wednesdays, January 25 – March 28, 2012, 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Great Decisions, the centerpiece of the longest running civic education program in the United States devoted to foreign affairs, empowers readers to discuss global issues shaping U.S. foreign policy and the world. The program is part of the Foreign Policy Association, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring the American public to learn more about the world. Founded in 1918, the Foreign Policy Association serves as a catalyst for developing awareness, understanding of and providing informed opinions on global issues. Through its balanced, nonpartisan programs and publications, the FPA encourages citizens to participate in the foreign policy process.

Dahlia Lithwick—contributing editor at Newsweek, senior editor at Slate, and contributor to the New York Times—will talk about the Supreme Court. She writes "Supreme Court Dispatches" and "Jurisprudence" for Slate. She earned her BA from Yale and JD from Stanford and, before joining Slate in 1999, worked for a family law firm in Reno.

Investors meet twice a month (1st & 3rd Fridays) to discuss stock and bond markets and investment strategies. After general discussion, the focus turns to a specific topic. The special topic on February 3rd is Mutual Funds, ETFs, Closed-End Funds or Stock Investments, and Risk/Reward. No money is collected or invested, and investors of all levels are welcome. How Rehab Can Restore Strength, Mobility, Mental Function
Tuesday, March 6, 10 - 11:30 a.m.

Carrie Jones, Director of Rehabilitation from Charlottesville Health & Rehabilitation Center, will discuss how Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapies can restore strength, mobility, and independence after strokes, hip fractures, knee replacements, and other major surgery or accidents, and how it can help Parkinson’s, arthritis, dementia, foot deformities, etc. She’ll also share examples of real success stories that show how life is never over unless you give up.

Arthritis Foundation and Exercise
Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.

Exercise is important for joint motion and muscle strength for those with arthritis. Instructor Maggie Schmidt leads this entry-level class, following the Arthritis Foundation Program, to help those with arthritis get moving again. A chair is used for balance. Register at the front desk and get an AF form and information for your doctor. Come to class in this carpeted room in comfortable clothing and athletic shoes with stability. Bring a yoga mat if you will be on the floor.

Ballroom Dance Lessons

Tuesdays, 2:00 p.m. –  2:55 p.m.

Senior Bowling League at Kegler’s
Tuesdays, 9:00 – 11:30 a.m.

Endless are the mysteries of what happens every Tuesday morning at Kegler’s lanes. Come watch or join in. The magic that transforms variously handicapped seniors when they enter the doors. All handicapped symptoms suddenly disappear and the excitement and wonders of youth take over. If this next statement is not convincing then the next one will be. You will review your memories and perhaps return to participate. Free admission to watch! Lane fees and shoe rental apply—less than a ticket to a movie and you can join in the show.

DanceFit
Mondays, 11:30–12:30 p.m.

Gain fitness and increased flexibility dancing to Broadway tunes. Instructor Edna-Jakki “EJ” Miller has over 30 years experience in teaching and personal training in fitness, dance and holistic health. All ages, conditions and levels, beginner to advanced, can join in the fun. Workouts are joint-friendly, safe, and effective.

Love to dance? Don't have a partner? If you want to have fun and exercise, both physically and mentally, then line dancing is for you. This group cares more about having fun than the accuracy of steps. The first hour focus on beginner-level dances, but all levels are welcome the entire time.

Senior Golf Group of Charlottesville
Thursday, March 15, 1:30–3:00 p.m. (Annual Registration Meeting)

The season begins April 2 and ends October 29. Meadowcreek Golf Course in Pen Park reserves Monday mornings for senior play on the back nine. Greens fees and cart fees, which are set by the golf course, will be announced at the meeting. Come renew old friendships or make new ones. Meditation Cultivation  (Falun Dafa)

Energize your body and quiet the mind by this ancient Chinese practice. Based on the universal principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance, five exercises are used to open the body’s energy channels and enable energy to circulate while purifying the body and providing relief from stress and tension. The movements are simple and easy to learn, and suitable for people of all ages and levels of fitness. The exercises are very flexible, and can be done anytime, anywhere, and for any duration. Parkinson’s Exercise
Mondays, 11:00 a.m. & Thursdays, 10:45 a.m.

Offered in partnership with UVa’s Adult Neurology Department, instructor Sharon Honeycutt leads participants through various exercises to promote ways of moving and speaking to better cope with the many symptoms of Parkinson’s and other neurological diseases. Bring an exercise mat and wear comfortable clothing.

Primetime Fitness
Mon, Wed & Friday 9:45 a.m-10:45 a.m.
Tuesday & Thursday 9:30-10:30 a.m

Taught by certified instructors, Primetime Fitness features two class styles each week. The 3-day series is geared toward active people who want to build cardio-vascular strength, tone body, and improve balance. It includes low-impact aerobics and body toning and stretching exercises and is taught by Marcy Parmiter. The 2-day series includes low impact aerobics and weight and chair exercises for people who want to build cardio-vascular and muscular strength and improve balance is taught by Maggie Schmidt. Bring a mat and wear good athletic shoes and comfortable clothes. You can attend all 5 classes for one low monthly price.

Rice-Silver Exercise Class
Mondays & Wednesdays, 9:00–10:00 a.m.

The Rice-Silver Exercise Class is one of the longest running, lay volunteer led programs at the Senior Center, starting prior to the opening of the current facility.  The exercises are low impact stretching and strengthening.  Equal time is spent both standing and on a mat.  The exercise routine is facilitated through use of a tape or CD.  Members are welcome to observe before making it part of their weekly routine.  Bring an exercise mat and wear comfortable clothes.

Silver Steppers
Tuesday and Thursdays 1:30-2:30 pm

This is our experienced and performing group of hoofers! If you like to tap or have previous experience, this is the group for you. .

Tai Chi

Wednesday, 7:30-8:30 p.m.

Stimulate your immune system, lower your blood pressure, decrease your stress and improve your balance. That’s not a bad scorecard for one hour’s worth of exercise! If you can can walk, you can play. Visitors are welcome to see if this class is for them.

Barbershop Belles
Fridays  3:00–4:00 p.m.

The Barbershop Belles are in the process of regrouping.  In order to appeal to more singers, they are expanding their repertoire to include a broader range of music, not necessarily barbershop harmony. Ceramics
Tuesdays, 10:00 a.m–noon

Looking for something fun and creative to do? Join our ceramics class! Our requirement is simple: Show up with a desire to have fun in this therapeutic class. We are now making Christmas trees—the holidays are right around the corner! We are also busy painting kittens, mallards, wolves, and, of course, useful items such as plates, bowls, platters and mugs, which are always in great demand. What a great gift to give when you “made it yourself.” The ceramics are dishwasher and microwave safe, so can be used and enjoyed for years. Class is taught by Novella Mawyer, owner of Lazy Daisy Ceramics, Inc. and The Pottery Paintin' Place.

Topic:  Smart Phones and Their Carriers—Which One is Best for You?

Andre Saunders and his team from Best Buy will give an introductory piece about how far mobile technology has come, and an overview of the various carriers. This will be followed with an extended discussion and Q&A on the merits of the various carriers.

Socrate’s Café
2nd Thursday of each month, 6:30–8:30 p.m.

Come join us! You can count on a very interesting discussion. Each person may suggest a philosophical question, for example: “Does accepting cultural change affect the real me?” or “Was the action taken in a crisis situation good or bad?” The group then votes on the question to be discussed. Discussion begins as we try to find satisfying and logical answers. Often one may “see the light” of a new way to consider an old opinion.  Come to ask, just to listen, or offer some thoughts.  All are welcome!

Dominos
Wednesdays, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Do you remember playing Dominos? Would you like to play again? Join this social Wednesday morning group and learn to play again. Dominoes are believed to have originated in China in the 12th century, though Egyptian or Arabian origins are also theorized. Dominoes appeared in Italy in the early eighteenth century, and spread to the rest of Europe throughout the remainder of the 1700's, becoming one of the most popular games in both family parlors and pubs alike.

Charlottesville Chicks
Thursday, February 23, 12:00 p.m. (depart Senior Center parking lot)
Reservation Deadline:  Sunday, February 19

This month we will visit a newly opened, state-of-the-art winery perched on a hill in North Garden with a beautiful view of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. The menu offers specialty table cuisine on small plates with seasonal local items designed to be paired with the wines. Wine tastings are offered as well. Meet with friends from the Senior Center on the first Wednesday of every month at 5:00 p.m. in the De Lawter Room.  We travel together to attend events in and around Charlottesville as well as on longer trips through the Senior Center travel office. Volunteer Nancy Grim leads the Travel Buddies meetings. You can also  her with any questions.

Bereavement Support Group
Friday, February 10 & 24, 3:00-4:30 p.m.

Previously called Life After Loss, this open group meets the 2nd and 4th Friday of each month. It is facilitated by Hospice of the Piedmont trained counselors, and offers opportunities to discuss grief topics, learn about healthy ways of coping with grief, and share support with others going through similar experiences.

Blood Pressure screenings are provided by Nurse Advantage/Care Advantage Plus in the Senior Center Lobby. No appointment necessary.  Free and for members only.

Essential Tremor Support Group
Thursday, February 9, 4:00–5:00 p.m.

Of 20-plus different kinds of tremor, essential tremor (ET) is the most common. Also known as familial tremor, benign essential tremor or hereditary tremor, ET is a neurological condition that is often confused with Parkinson’s disease and dystonia. Because of misguided beliefs and a lack of awareness, many people with this condition never seek medical care though most would benefit from treatment. Join this group that meets on the second Thursday of each month. This group is both educational and supportive. For more information, contact John Watterson at 434-973-2510.

This weight-loss support group welcomes anyone to visit for free. Yearly membership is $26. Whether you have 10 pounds or 100 pounds to lose, we invite you to come share the fun of losing weight in a warm, supportive, encouraging environment. To learn more, please call Joann Pearson at 296-1640.
