provides reduced rates for fee-based programs and allows for participation
in events that are open to members only. Guests are welcome to attend events that

It’s that time of year again! We’ve even added one more day this year,
so that more of you will be able to take advantage of this FREE service.

Great
Decisions, the centerpiece of the longest running civic education program
in the United States devoted to foreign affairs, empowers readers to
discuss global issues shaping U.S. foreign policy and the world. The
program is part of the Foreign Policy Association, which is a
non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring the American public to
learn more about the world. Founded in 1918, the Foreign Policy
Association serves as a catalyst for developing awareness,
understanding of and providing informed opinions on global issues. Through
its balanced, nonpartisan programs and publications, the FPA encourages
citizens to participate in the foreign policy process.

Investors meet twice a month (1st & 3rd Fridays) to discuss stock
and bond markets and investment strategies. After general discussion, the

Series How Rehab Can Restore Strength, Mobility,
Mental Function Tuesday, March 6, 10 - 11:30
a.m.
Carrie Jones, Director of Rehabilitation from
Charlottesville Health & Rehabilitation Center, will discuss how
Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapies can restore strength,
mobility, and independence after strokes, hip fractures, knee
replacements, and other major surgery or accidents, and how it can help
Parkinson’s, arthritis, dementia, foot deformities, etc. She’ll also
share examples of real success stories that show how life is never over

Arthritis Foundation and Exercise Tuesdays
& Thursdays, 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.
Exercise is important for joint motion and muscle strength for those
with arthritis. Instructor Maggie Schmidt leads this entry-level class,
following the Arthritis Foundation Program, to help those with arthritis
get moving again. A chair is used for balance. Register at the front desk
and get an AF form and information for your doctor. Come to class in this
carpeted room in comfortable clothing and athletic shoes with stability.

Ballroom Dance Lessons Tuesdays,

Cathleen Rhodes, from Terry Dean’s Dance Studio will teach swing

Senior Bowling League at Kegler’s Tuesdays,
9:00 – 11:30 a.m.
Endless are the mysteries of what happens every Tuesday morning at
Kegler’s lanes. Come watch or join in. The magic that transforms variously
handicapped seniors when they enter the doors. All handicapped symptoms
suddenly disappear and the excitement and wonders of youth take over. If
this next statement is not convincing then the next one will be. You will
review your memories and perhaps return to participate. Free admission to

Senior Golf Group of Charlottesville Thursday,

The season begins April 2 and ends October
29. Meadowcreek Golf Course in Pen Park reserves Monday mornings for
senior play on the back nine. Greens fees and cart fees, which are set by
the golf course, will be announced at the meeting. Come renew old

Meditation Cultivation (Falun

Energize your body and quiet the mind by this ancient Chinese practice.
Based on the universal principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and
Tolerance, five exercises are used to open the body’s energy channels and
enable energy to circulate while purifying the body and providing relief
from stress and tension. The movements are simple and easy to learn, and
suitable for people of all ages and levels of fitness. The exercises are
very flexible, and can be done anytime, anywhere, and for any duration.

Parkinson’s Exercise Mondays, 11:00 a.m. &
Thursdays, 10:45 a.m.
Offered in partnership with UVa’s Adult Neurology Department,
instructor Sharon Honeycutt leads participants through various exercises
to promote ways of moving and speaking to better cope with the many
symptoms of Parkinson’s and other neurological diseases. Bring an exercise
mat and wear comfortable clothing. A $65

Primetime Fitness Mon, Wed & Friday
9:45 a.m-10:45 a.m. Tuesday & Thursday 9:30-10:30 a.m
Taught by certified instructors, Primetime Fitness features two class
styles each week. The 3-day series is geared toward active people who want
to build cardio-vascular strength, tone body, and improve balance. It
includes low-impact aerobics and body toning and stretching exercises and
is taught by Marcy Parmiter. The 2-day series includes low impact
aerobics and weight and chair exercises for people who want to build
cardio-vascular and muscular strength and improve balance is taught by
Maggie Schmidt. Bring a mat and wear good athletic shoes and comfortable

Rice-Silver Exercise Class Mondays &
Wednesdays, 9:00–10:00 a.m.
The Rice-Silver Exercise Class is
one of the longest running, lay volunteer led programs at the Senior
Center, starting prior to the opening of the current facility. The
exercises are low impact stretching and strengthening. Equal time is
spent both standing and on a mat. The exercise routine is
facilitated through use of a tape or CD. Members are welcome to
observe before making it part of their weekly routine. Bring an

Silver Steppers Tuesday and Thursdays 1:30-2:30

This is our experienced and performing group of hoofers! If
you like to tap or have previous experience, this is the group for you.

Stimulate
your immune system, lower your blood pressure, decrease your stress and
improve your balance. That’s not a bad scorecard for one hour’s worth of
exercise! If you can can walk, you can play. Visitors are welcome to see

The Barbershop Belles are in the process of
regrouping. In order to appeal to more singers, they are expanding

Ceramics Tuesdays, 10:00

Looking for something fun and creative to do? Join our ceramics class!
Our requirement is simple: Show up with a desire to have fun in this
therapeutic class. We are now making Christmas trees—the holidays
are right around the corner! We are also busy painting kittens, mallards,
wolves, and, of course, useful items such as plates, bowls, platters and
mugs, which are always in great demand. What a great gift to give when you
“made it yourself.” The ceramics are dishwasher and microwave safe,
so can be used and enjoyed for years. Class is taught by Novella Mawyer,
owner of Lazy Daisy Ceramics, Inc. and The Pottery Paintin'

Best for You?
Andre Saunders and his team from Best Buy will give
an introductory piece about how far mobile technology has come, and an
overview of the various carriers. This will be followed with an
extended discussion and Q&A on the merits of the various
carriers.

help you decide if you need one and which to buy. Get answers to your

votes on the question to be discussed. Discussion begins as we try to find

Dominos Wednesdays, 9:30-11:30 a.m.
Do you remember playing Dominos? Would you like to play again? Join
this social Wednesday morning group and learn to play again. Dominoes are
believed to have originated in China in the 12th century, though Egyptian
or Arabian origins are also theorized. Dominoes appeared in Italy in the
early eighteenth century, and spread to the rest of Europe throughout the
remainder of the 1700's, becoming one of the most popular games in both
family parlors and pubs alike. Free

This month we will visit a newly
opened, state-of-the-art winery perched on a hill in North Garden with a
beautiful view of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. The menu offers
specialty table cuisine on small plates with seasonal local items designed
to be paired with the wines. Wine tastings are offered as well. Drivers

Meet with friends from the Senior Center on the first Wednesday of

Bereavement Support Group Friday, February 10
& 24, 3:00-4:30 p.m.
Previously called Life After
Loss, this open group meets the 2nd and 4th Friday of each month.
It is facilitated by Hospice of the Piedmont trained counselors, and
offers opportunities to discuss grief topics, learn about healthy ways of
coping with grief, and share support with others going through similar

Essential Tremor Support Group Thursday,
February 9, 4:00–5:00 p.m.
Of 20-plus different kinds of
tremor, essential tremor (ET) is the most common. Also known as familial
tremor, benign essential tremor or hereditary tremor, ET is a neurological
condition that is often confused with Parkinson’s disease and dystonia.
Because of misguided beliefs and a lack of awareness, many people with
this condition never seek medical care though most would benefit from
treatment. Join this group that meets on the second Thursday of each
month. This group is both educational and supportive. For more

This weight-loss support group welcomes anyone to visit for free.
