Spring Concert
Sunday, May 3, 3:00 p.m.

The internationally-acclaimed violinist, Mr. Max Rabinovitsj, will appear as soloist on Theme from Schindler's List, by John Williams, with our Second-Wind Band at our Spring Concert.

Come have fun celebrating the joys of springtime with our 60-member Second-Wind Band for an afternoon of shared musical delights. The varied program on Sunday May 3rd at 3:00 p.m. will include: stirring marches PATTON, ARMED FORCES SALUTE, and Sousa's STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER; inspirational music by Copland ~ DOWN A COUNTRY LANE, Puccini ~ NESSUN DORMA (from Turandot), Respighi ~ THE PINES OF ROME (Finale~The Pines Of The Appian Way), John Williams ~ Theme from SCHINDLER'S LIST, featuring soloist Max Rabinovitsj on violin, and Duke Ellington ~ COME SUNDAY, featuring soloist Joan Cabell on alto saxophone; memorable songs DANNY BOY, EL CHOCLO (Argentine Tango), and ASHOKAN FAREWELL; a medley of unforgettable tunes from MARY POPPINS; and, for good measure, we will add the waltz of all waltzes, à là André Rieu. Refreshments provided. Tickets on sale now at the Front Desk: $8 for Senior Center members and their families/friends, $12 for general public, $8 for groups of six or more. Children under 12 are free.

The band has 60+ members playing programs much like those of the typical municipal bands of the past 50 years--marches, musical comedy, ballads and so on. Some players had not played since high school, and some had never played before. We blend our increasing abilities to play for the community and have fun in the process. Our rehersals are on most Tuesdays form 10:45 to 12:45 p.m. Check the schedule on the link below. Visitors are welcome to attend our rehersals.

The Flashbacks Swing Band

This is a dance band of about twenty members that plays music from the ‘20s, ‘30s, and ‘40s, and even ‘50s and ‘60s. In addition to performing at community-wide events like First Night Virginia and the Virginia Festival of the Book, at area retirement residences, and for some dances at the Senior Center, the band is available for private events. Visitors are welcome at our rehearsals on Fridays from 10:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m.

We are associated with a national group, the New Horizons Bands. Senior bands were first started by Roy Ernst, a music educator from Rochester, New York. After ten years of existence, this enthusiastic group numbers over one hundred bands.
