Second Wind Band Holiday Concert Sunday,
December 4, at 3:00 p.m.
Greg Vaughn debuts as director
of the Second-Wind Band with a variety of tunes and holiday music.
Delicious refreshments also make this a fun, festive social
gathering to begin the holiday season. Tickets go on sale on
November 1 at the front desk and are $8 for Senior Center members
and their families, $12 for the general public, and $10 each for
groups of six or more. Children under 12 are free. Ticket sales help
support Center programs. |
The band is a New Horizons Project Band. Translated that means anyone
can join who plays, or has played a band instrument. No auditions are
necessary. Or anyone who would like to learn how to play a band instrument
is invited to join this wonderful group of people who have fun making
music together.
The band has 60+ members playing programs much like those of the
typical municipal bands of the past 50 years--marches, musical comedy,
ballads and so on. We blend our increasing abilities to play for the
community and have fun in the process. Our rehearsals are on
most Tuesdays from 10:45 to 12:45 p.m.
Visitors are welcome to attend our rehearsals.
A person who has never before played an instrument might like to take
some lessons first, and there are several band members who are very
willing to mentor new members including beginning players. Visitors are
always welcome to check the band out on Tuesday mornings from 10:45-12:45
p.m. Pull up a chair and enjoy the fun! Contact Liz Allan (434-971-2989)
or Jane Whitworth (434-978-7718), or email Greg Vaughn
for more information.
The
Flashbacks Swing Band
The Flashbacks have a new director this year, Dennis Sizemore. Dennis
did his Master’s and Doctoral studies in Saxophone Performance with a
minor in Jazz Studies at Indiana University, during which time he
instructed undergraduate and graduate jazz saxophone majors and taught
woodwind techniques. He also completed a year of post-graduate study with
Daniel Deffayet at the Paris Conservatory. He is accomplished on both
saxophone and Native American flute. He has been a featured soloist
with many concert orchestras and performed throughout North America and
the Caribbean as a solo artist. Questions can be addressed to Dennis at
.
This is a dance band of about twenty members that plays music from the
‘20s, ‘30s, and ‘40s, and even ‘50s and ‘60s. In addition to performing at
community-wide events like First Night Virginia and the Virginia Festival
of the Book, at area retirement residences, and for some dances at the
Senior Center, the band is available for private events. Visitors
are welcome at our rehearsals on Fridays from 10:45 a.m.-12:45
p.m. For more information email Dennis Sizemore at
.
These bands are associated with a national group, the New Horizons
Bands. Senior bands were first started by Roy Ernst, a music educator from
Rochester, New York. After ten years of existence, this enthusiastic group
numbers over one hundred bands.
