Second-Wind Band & The Flashbacks

10th Anniversary Tribute

Westminster Canterbury, 4/27/04

Second-Wind Band

Spring Concert - Sunday, May 2, 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Sit back, relax, and let the sound of beautiful music envelop, inspire, and refresh you when the Senior Center’s 60-member Second-Wind Band presents its 15th annual spring concert on Sunday, May 2, at 3:00 p.m.

Band director Stephen Millard will conduct a varied program that includes a popular tango from Argentina, a paso doble from Spain, stirring marches, and the St. Louis Blues. You’ll also hear Come Sunday from Duke Ellington’s Concert of Sacred Music, Albinoni’s Adagio, Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, a medley of songs from the movie Braveheart, and more. With refreshments after the performance, this promises to be an enjoyable afternoon for audience members of every age.

Tickets for the band’s spring concert are on sale now at the Center’s front desk. Admission is $8 for Center members and their families, $12 for the general public, and $9 for groups of 6 or more; children under 12 get in free.

The band has 60+ members playing programs much like those of the typical municipal bands of the past 50 years--marches, musical comedy, ballads and so on. Some players had not played since high school, and some had never played before. We blend our increasing abilities to play for the community and have fun in the process. Our rehersals are on most Tuesdays form 10:45 to 12:45 p.m. Check the schedule on the link below. Visitors are welcome to attend our rehersals.

The Flashbacks Swing Band

This is a dance band of about twenty members that plays music from the ‘20s, ‘30s, and ‘40s, and even ‘50s and ‘60s. In addition to performing at community-wide events like First Night Virginia and the Virginia Festival of the Book, at area retirement residences, and for some dances at the Senior Center, the band is available for private events. Visitors are welcome at our rehearsals on Fridays from 10:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m.

We are associated with a national group, the New Horizons Bands. Senior bands were first started by Roy Ernst, a music educator from Rochester, New York. After ten years of existence, this enthusiastic group numbers over one hundred bands.
