DERBY DAY ’03

by
Jane Grau

I chose a horse named Funny Cide

To win the Derby crown.

I’d never heard his name before,

I just liked it’s sound.

The jockey’s name was Santos.

His silks were pretty too.

I just took a wild chance,

Not knowing what he’d do.

Soon the words "They’re off"

Began the famous race.

I kept a hopeful eye

On my horse and jockey’s pace.

Sure enough, number six

Broke loose from the pack.

A handsome sight of speed and grace

As he thundered down the track.

I cheered him on, jumped from my chair,

My mint julep in my hand.

My friends stared at me in disbelief,

They didn’t understand.

He thundered past the favorites

With a quarter mile to go.

This horse that I’d picked on a whim

Had won and stole the show.

My friends and I had placed our bets

Now I could celebrate.

I gathered up my winnings,

A cool dollar fifty-eight.
