Mental Maturityby Jane Grau As our individual beings progress through life’s cycles and enter into the realm of advanced maturity, certain accompanying behaviors take on less than complementary names and titles, usually administered by those who are one or two cycles behind. Physical terms are often less offensive to digest than those assigned to mental advancement. Epithets such as dementia, onset Alzheimer’s, absent-minded, forgetful, vague, out of it, oblivious, whifty, ect., all come to mind. Often times we ponder all these insinuations, especially when we attempt to entertain more than one thought, or undertake several tasks at a time. Invariably, the priority goes to the second or last intended function, and the others follow in sequence or not at all, depending on the circumstances…no doubt giving rise to the expression, "left on the back burner". In some frustrating instances, all considerations disappear from the radar screen simultaneously, but there-in lies another topic all together. After giving some concentrated, singular thought to the subject, I arrived at a more tasteful and politically correct term for the above mentioned inappropriately applied nomenclature. I prefer to refer to it as "MTPU" or MITPOO, more technically known as "Multi-Tasking-Priority-Unpropitiousness". This reference offers us a way of setting ourselves free from petty stereo-typing. Thus, not only does it lend an air of dignity to the process, but also rewards us with a degree of satisfaction when we can recall all four words of the term, in order. © Jane Grau 2005 245 words |
