The Early History from the 1720s to the 1850s
Introduction - Albemarle's history is thick with fascinating individuals including mapmakers, frontiersmen, engineers, educators, writers, and presidents. Many others fought and died in our nation's great struggles - fully half labored in bondage.
The Class - Held at the Senior Center, Inc., for six Thursday's beginning September 4, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This six-session class will give you a thorough grounding in the early history ofAlbemarle County. Cost per person: $40 (Senior Center members: $30). There will be an opportunity to take a trip at the conclusion of the course, for an additional fee. Instructor is Rick Britton. He is an award winning historical journalist and has written 2 books and over 200 articles.

Culture and Art of Greece: Past and Present
Introduction: This presentation will highlight the major time frames that correspond with historical and artistic-archeological developments in ancient Greece, moving to contemporary culture upon which those developments are based.
The Class: Held at the Senior Center, Inc on Tuesday, September 23 and Tuesday, September 30 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This two-day session will cover the geography, important time frames in Greek History, cultural dimensions, political and religious issues, major developments and contributions from Ancient Greece focusing on the Classical and Hellenistic Periods, art and architecture, and the Greek Islands. This presentation is being conducted in preparation for our Senior Center trip to Greece - featuring Greek Isle Cruising with Mayflower Tours, November 11-19, 2008.
Cost:
$20 Senior Center members, $30 visitors
Participants: Mimimum 30, Maximum 100
Time: 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
About the Instructor: Charlotte McDaniel is a retired professor from Emory University and was a Fulbright Scholar in 2002-2003. She studied art history ay Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri with Professor Mylonas, who spent thirty years conducting archaeological digs in Greece, his country of origin.
